Our readers (you) are encouraged to join the conversation by sending in your thoughts, illustrations, inspired creative pieces and opinions, which will then be displayed on the post. The Ploughman’s Vision
Each morning, the ploughman rises. He stands at the edge of his field and stares deep into the rising sun, all while knowing that the day ahead will bring hard labour and exhaustion. His field needs to be ploughed, and so he must work, but just for a moment he will stare out and dream of an escape. That flicker of longing, of imagining a golden life elsewhere, that is the heart of The Ploughman’s.
This space is for anybody who finds themselves with the same longing as the ploughman. It’s for those who wake, work and sleep, and somewhere in between find themselves wondering if there could be more. We believe that the exploration and admiration of literature is the definitive way to blur these lines, to transcend beyond the mundane norms of everyday life and live a wider existence.
The vision of the ploughman is that of the rising sun, of the rays reaching his eyes and warming his mind. Through stories and words, that vision can be shared.

Do I have to buy a book to join in? No, not at all. You can follow along with our reflections, reviews and puzzles all for free – you can even send in your own thoughts to be featured on the site with no payment made. The only payments involved are voluntary donations to support The Ploughman’s, or joining our monthly subscription, where you will receive a second-hand copy of the book of the month in the post. Both of these are entirely optional!
Can I suggest a book or poem? Yes, please do! We are a community, and love when our viewers help us decide what should be the next book or poem should be.
I’m not a big reader – can I still join in? Absolutely. The Ploughman’s is for everyone and anyone who wants to explore literature alone, or alongside a community. If reading a book monthly isn’t your thing – that’s totally fine – feel free to take your time to scroll along older posts and discover our vision at your own pace.
Why second-hand books? We at The Ploughman’s try to be as sustainable as possible. When there are hundreds of thousands of old, well kept copies of books available, why print more?
